The Charmer was built in 1929 by Neal Terpstra. Mr. Terpstra worked for the Sears building department and used the “Mitchell” architectural plans to build a spec home.
“The Mitchell follows the latest English architecture with a touch of the popular California studio type. Two gables, one higher then that other, bring out the beauty of the shingled sidewall and high roof. A picturesque stone and brick chimney rises at the left of the door (“the door” that had me at first sight) between the gables. Strap iron hinges on the sturdy arched front door bespeak the hospitality and happiness that dwell withing”.

Chicago Land Sears Homes
Neal and Jeannette lived in the house for 18 years and had five children there. They moved to South Holland, IL in December 1947.
Fast forward 62 years — I was working in my front yard when a women stopped by to tell me it was her father, Neal, who had built the home. Most of her brothers and sisters had moved to Michigan and would be back in town the following month. They wanted to see the house! I was so excited and instantly said YES!
Before they departed they told me how happy they were that I was now taking care of her, and knew how much I loved her.
One of the most memorable days of my life!
