I have got to say I really like the change from the red. i have even been thinking about getting rid of my red kitchen/dining rooms. I see what you mean, but you need to live with it for at least a week or two and you will get used to it. maybe you could stripe or stencil on the wall by the stairs...make it a focal point and something special, but do it subtle like a tone on tone. Then put a big green something like a picture on that wall to tie in with the rest of the walls.
