Sleep patterns, Is your bedroom ruining them?
Good sleep patterns are all part of a healthy lifestyle. Are you getting enough high quality sleep? If not, then you could find other aspects of your health start to get disrupted. For instance, your moods might deteriorate because of tiredness throughout the day. Many believe that a lack of sleep can increase our risk of certain health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
Don’t think you have been getting enough sleep lately? Maybe the problem lies with your bedroom. Here are a few reasons why your bedroom might be ruining your sleep.
There Are Too Many Distractions
Do you have any tech devices in your bedroom, like computers and a TV? If so, you should remove these. It’s also not a good idea to take your smartphone or tablet device to bed with you. The reason for this is that these screens emit a lot of blue light which will wake up your brain. Ideally, don’t have any screen time for at least an hour before you go to bed so that your mind can wind down and get ready for sleep.
It’s Too Light
Our body needs darkness to sleep. If the room is too light, then you will find it harder to drop off at night and you will wake up fairly frequently. You don’t have to live with this, though. If the problem comes from streetlights right outside your window, you should invest in some blackout blinds from the likes of Ming’s Living, or you could simply wear an eye mask in bed. It’s also a good idea to decorate the room in warm earth tones. Any color that is too bright could stimulate your mind.
It’s Too Noisy
If your bedroom is noisy, then you might want to invest in some earplugs! But there are some better, long-term solutions you could try as well. For instance, noise from a road right outside can be effectively blocked with some modern double-glazed windows. Still hearing some annoying sounds? You might want to invest in a white-noise machine. The body finds white noise very relaxing. If you play it in the background of your bedroom, the sound is often enough to drown out other noises while relaxing you at the same time.
The Bed Is Dated
Another issue that some have is that they are trying to sleep on an old bed and mattress. Old mattresses can become extremely lumpy and very uncomfortable. You will end up tossing around in bed trying to find a comfy position! Ideally, you should get a new mattress every five years, even if your current one doesn’t feel that bad. For the best-possible night’s sleep, think about getting a memory foam mattress – there is nothing comfier to sleep on!
Once you have ironed out all of the above issues in your bedroom, your sleep patterns should improve and then help eliminate any problems falling asleep. And, as a result, your overall health will improve as well!
