Keep Those Nasty Squirrels From Eating Your Outdoor Pumpkins!

Smiles peeps,

Every year I get excited when fall comes and begin decorating our front porch.

I love porch vignettes filled with pumpkins, gourds and Indian corn.

Then it happens, you know, you start seeing those nibbles on your pumpkins!

Do you recognize this bite?  Our neighborhood has a high population...
and our garden laden yard offers so many treats!

Their cute right, but they are so pesky!

So how do we keep them from eating our fall accessories?

Simple..

We spray our pumpkins, gourds and Indian Corn...

with Rust-oleum Clear spray paint!

The larger pumpkin has been sprayed and has a nice coat to protect it from the little devils!

No nasty bites in our front porch window boxes - they been out here over a week...

Or on the porch steps.

So simple, so effective.

I can hear the squirrels crying in the trees!

Too bad, so sad!

  1. Hi Cathy, we have a huge population of squirrels and raccoons that eat the avocados on our tree, and any that make it to the ground intact get nibbled. Then the raccoons come and scrape them clean. I haven't put any pumpkins outside yet, but you are right, they would have a nice meal and leave the place a mess. Your arrangements are beautifully festive! I hope the varmints stay away so you can enjoy your decorative success!

  2. Smart tip, Cathy. I am growing a pretty pumpkin, and have left it on the vine for as long as possible, but it's about time to pick it and put it on the front stoop! I love your idea of using gourds and squash in the window boxes as well--very pretty! Glad you stopped by and enjoyed my morning glory post--I love their bright blue out in the garden at this time of year!

  3. We have a large squirrel population in our neighborhood too but they have never eaten a pumpkin. Probably because they are busy eating all the sunflower seeds in our bird feeders.

  4. Great tip Cathy...those little buggers are so brazen this time of year!
